Fixer - Upper
Posted on September 17, 2007 in the Uncategorized category
For anyone that has bought a fixer-upper take solace in the fact that you are not alone in your dislike of the state of perpetual construction in your home. My wife and I did just that - we purchased what we could afford knowing that we would have to put money and some time and effort into it to make it our home.
Little did we know that four years later we would still be at it. Over the years we have done the basic things like new paint and appliances - and not so basic things like install wood and parquet floors (the nail in kind), tiled kitchen and bathroom, roof, and drywall. Now, I am sure that most contractors would consider hanging drywall one of the more basic things you could do. While putting up the drywall is pretty straight forward, the tough part - and the part I vow to never do again - is mudding, taping, and sanding.
I am sure all junior do-it-yourselfers would agree with me - this task is not for the amateur weekend warrior. We had replaced all the drywall in our two bedrooms and the bathroom and I am sure that you can see every seam. It seemed that the harder I tried, the worse it looked - so I would take a break, have a beer and try again. This too did not work - the ceiling in the boys room would probably look better if I had forgotten about joint compound all together and just put up duct tape. They say that knowledge is power, perhaps I should have consulted a friend or even looked it up on the internet. I am sure that a visit to DoItYourself.com to check out the do-it-yourself DVDs would have helped tremendously.
Mudding and Taping - Lesson 1
Do not drink beer while trying to conduct home improvement tasks. If you currently have a beer in your hand, please wait 24hrs before commencing DIY activities.
