Celebrity President Death Match

I am getting rather disappointed with the ongoing deterioration of American politics. Sad to say that this presidential election cycle is experiencing a further cheapening of the office of President Of The United States Of America.
Because of my age - I think I am 28 or so - I have only had the experience of the last 3 Presidential Elections on which to make my argument; however, I think the pattern is clear.
For me, the downward slide started with the 1992 Election when the MTV generation began clamoring for attention. I think it was the “Rock the Vote” campaign that ran for the ‘92 and ‘96 elections - then they changed it to “Choose or Lose.” Apparently they needed something that sounded a bit more dramatic to get younger people out to vote. It seems MTV has been on the “Choose or Lose” trip even still . . .
Now its the internet age and YouTube is joining in on the party. YouTube has been hosting Presidential debates and has a portion of its website dedicated to election coverage. I feel that they have further denigrated the Office of President by having the debate run, basically, by rank amateurs asking the questions. I think the tipping point for me was the snowman asking questions about global warming.
Is the presidency a joke? I feel the office should be treated with a bit more respect from that. I do not want to see rock star wannabe presidents out playing their saxophones any more than I want to see impotent celebrities telling people who to vote for.
What I want to see is a true leader - someone who does not run based on public opinion. We need a candidate that is running solely for the reason that he/she feels that their plan is best for the country, something people can get behind and support. All too often it is the other way around - politicians try to appeal to the fleeting whims of a society riddled with ADD.
Thats it I suppose . . . I guess I am done ranting. One final thought - I find it rather curious that the Democrats keep posturing themselves against George W. Bush . . . don’t they know that he isn’t running again? Perhaps they do not really have a platform other than “Well at least I’m not Bush!”
