Anybody want a phone book?

by Mathew

So a couple weeks back I was looking for a quick and easy way to make some extra money. I found an ad in a free circular looking for people to deliver phone books.

After getting a hold of the local distributor, I find out that I would be delivering for the Talking Phone book in my area. I get to make my own hours and do as much work as I want as long at it is available – seemed perfect at first . . .

But there was something that they didn’t tell me and I was too naive to think of – apparently not everyone is happy to get a new phone book. After doing this for a couple of weeks I have had numerous people yell at me, call me names, accuse me of littering, and one lady even through the book back at me into my Jeep. I cannot fathom what is wrong in these people’s worlds that would get them all bent out of shape about a phone book. Seriously – if you don’t want it, just put it in the recycle bin . . .

However that brings up the other problem . . . I still feel like I am doing something wrong whenever I deliver. I guess the only way I can relate it is that I kinda feel like I used to when I was a telemarketer. Technically I am not doing anything wrong but in the end it feels the same – I am doing it without the permission of the homeowner.

Well, I will most likely finish up the routes I have promised to do and put an end to it. . .
